Yellow Dal

We call this dal with different names, at my mom’s place, they call it as theeyapappu (though it is not sweet) and at my inlaw’s place, they call it as palsapappu.

This dal is very easy to make. I make this dal very often.

Yellow Dal ( Palsapappu)


1 cup tuar dal (serves 3-4)

2 cups water

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

Salt to taste

To Temper:

1 1/2 tbsp oil/ghee

3/4 tsp cumin seeds

1 tsp mustard seeds

Few curry leaves

4 garlic cloves

2 red chillies


1. Wash the dal, add turmeric powder, water and pressure cook the dal (First cook on high flame until a whistle is about to come, then reduce the flame to low and cook it for 10 minutes).

2. After the dal is cooked, mash the dal and keep it aside.

3. Heat oil in a small kadai and add the temper ingredients, fry for 30 seconds.

4. Add the temper and salt to the dal and bring it to a boil.

5. Serve hot with rice.
